The Beauty of Coloured Gemstones

It takes thousands of years for a gem mineral to take shape and form in their rock bed or gem gravel, but it takes only seconds to fall in love with it, once it’s beauty is brought to live by a talented gem cutter.

Those minerals can be found all over the world, but not all are of gem- quality of course. Gemstones are mostly inorganic with a fixed chemical composition and a regular internal structure. Far more than 100 gem species are known, but only about half are generally used as gemstones.

In order to qualify as a gem stone, it must be beautiful in it’s own right and have this magic color. The best Diamonds were supposed to be colorless, whereas colored gemstones brighten our lives with their radiance and magical colors.

A soft tone, or a bold, strong color, flawless and sparkling or with interesting inclusions, that are like birthmarks – gemstones come in many fascinating colors and cuts -  all is available and the choice is yours!

Do you prefer the clean blue of a summer’s day (blue topaz) or the yellowish green of a lemon quartz, or the mysterious violet of the amethyst or rather the blood red  of a fine ruby?

ZAM GEMS is offering a wide selection of the finest colored gemstones - among them are:

The Tourmaline, a gemstone that is found in many different colors – according to an old legend, the tourmaline, on it’s way form the centre of the earth, passed over the rainbow and thus assumed all the colors of a rainbow! The name tourmaline is derived from the Singhalese words   “tura mali” , which means ‘stone with mixed colors’.

The lovely Aquamarine, meaning “water of the sea” is a   Beryl. The preferred color changes with fashion.
Some like the mysterious sea-green, others prefer the more valued sky-blue variety.

The vivid green Peridot, also called “Olivine”, is mostly found in Burma & China. It is a very old gemstone and was already well known to the ancient Romans. The peridot is one of the few stones, that comes in one color only! It was very much in fashion during the barock age and now has it’s come-back during the last decade.

The Topaz occurs in a range of different colors from white, yellow, pink to green and blue. A durable and popular stone.

The brownish smoky Quartz, the rose quartz and lemon quartz. Quartz is one of the most common minerals found on earth

The berry-colored Amethyst also  belongs to the quartz family, just like the sunny & bright yellow Citrine.

The Garnet is a wonderful stone, the deep red or transparent green Garnet and the orange or cinnamon-colored Hessonite Garnet or just some of the many color variations.

The soft milky white of a full moon- the Moonstone, that could also be honey-colored or even mocha-brown. Shown here is a blue moonstone.

The fascinating Emerald, showing the most intense, most radiant green that there is. The name comes from the Greek word “ smaragdos”, via the old French word” esmeralde” and just means green gemstone. Top quality emeralds are more valuable than diamonds. Since ancient times, emeralds have been held in very high esteem and since lots of them have been used in antique jewellery, are found in many museums all over the world as well.

The majestic Ruby - a gemstone for kings and queens. For thousands of years the ruby was considered the most valuable gemstone on earth. The ruby is the red variety of the mineral corundum, the sapphire is the blue version- both are extremely hard.
Ruby – red stand for passion, love and strength – a warm and fiery tone. Some rubies display a wonderful silky shine. Most of the famous pigeon-blood red stones come from Burma . Another interesting variety is the star-ruby, that has a glittering star gliding over it’s smooth surface when moved.

And last, but not least the Sapphire. Its beauty, its magnificent colours, its transparency, but also its constancy and durability are qualities associated with this gemstone by gemstone lovers and specialists alike. The most sought after Sapphire  is royal or cornflower blue, but they also come in green, purple, yellow, orange or white. The so called Padparadschah is unique to Sri Lanka and displays a mixture between hot pink & intense orange – the color of an amazing Ceylon sunset.
